Art Direction

Hey, all!

So I screened a rough version of The High Five Apprentice for a seminar a couple weeks back and, to my relief, there was an incredibly good response from the audience during and after the film. After receiving some critiques from the audience, I realize that the main aspect of my film I need to work on is my art direction, especially that of the High Five Realm, and I agree. It looks a little bland and could stand to use some improvement (though keep in mind that I still need to insert textures into the backgrounds). I searched 'handscape' in google image and got this interesting result:

While I probably won't go as overboard with hands as this guy did, it serves as some really good inspiration in terms of how much hand-related visual images I can extract out of a background.

Also, I've talked with my Directed Studies prof Tom Sito from time to time and he mentioned Pepper Land from The Yellow Submarine, as it carries similar aspects of the High Five Realm except it's about 100 times more absurdly abstract. Here's an example.

So yes, that's the news for now. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

This is getting disturbing...

Hi, all! Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break.

I decided to stay at SC for the break since I needed to get more shots done. I won't post all the animation I've done, but I'll leave you with this tantalizing tidbit of nightmare fuel.

A couple notes: Blotto's dialogue for this bit will be slightly altered to have a more demonic/otherworldly vibe. Also, this shot was much less fun to animate than I thought, especially trying to do the lip-sync for Blotto's 'realistic' face. Oh well, it's out of the way.

In unrelated news, go see The Muppets!

The Cat-God of High Fives!

My hand hurts. Tail still needs to actually be animated, but the animation is mostly done for this shot, save for a couple lip-syncing tweaks.

Revised Animatic 2.0

New animatic with brand, spankin' new animated shots! Also includes more temporary music!

Eric Bauza did a phenomenal job as Blotto, and about 80% of the takes I used in the animatic will be in the final film (the deadline was coming up fast, so for the last two minutes of the film, I basically took whatever take came first). Also, I'm only doing the stand-in for Ray's dialogue. I initially planned on doing the final voice, but I'm not a very good fit for the character, so the search for his actor still goes on. In the meantime, enjoy!

Blotto can talk!

That's right, folks! Blotto's voice is finally recorded, with many thanks to the voice actor, Eric Bauza! It's so much fun to animate to, and really gives me freedom to play with Blotto's mannerisms... I have another dialogue shot done, but I'll keep that a surprise for my next revised animatic, which will be posted soon...

A Montage!

New montage! I showed this in class last week, but figured you were all ready to see it. (For those who saw it in class, I improved the first shot of Ray's silhouette... the planet looks like it's in the distance, now)

Did a few more shots this week, but they're pretty out-of-context, so I won't put them up quite yet.

A Rube Goldberg Machine of Good Faith

So, this has been one of my main tasks this weekend. This is sort of a mini-montage within the story that presents the domino effect of high fiving... one act of kindness leads to another! This will be presented in a slideshow format, and I hope to give this part a vintage look through the wonders of AfterEffects. So, these will all be stills, and not actually animated in the final film. There are two more finished drawings, and one more I still have to crank out.

You may notice that I chose to ditch the black lines, and went for a more mask-like, UPA style of drawing. (Here's a link to the Wikipedia article about UPA, for those who are unfamiliar.) It actually felt pretty relieving to work in a different style, and maybe down the road, I'd love to animate something with this sort of aesthetic.

Here's some more UPA-style images, that better represent the influence on this sequence.

I make stupid faces!

So this week, I decided to experiment further, and actually film myself doing Blotto's expression for shot 73. I put an hour aside, went on into Photo Booth, made sure I was by myself, and then did several takes of me doing rather silly expressions. My main challenge was animating Blotto's face to go from over-exaggerated joy to crushing disappointment. Here's the video, with the end result included!

The other challenge I realized I had to overcome was Blotto's ears, and what happens when he turns his head, while his body stays in place. His ears would have to come over his shoulder at some point. So I just had it sort of catch on his shoulder and then flip over to the other side. The video explains it a lot better than I do.

Did a couple other shots, and now working on rewriting my script.

Look everyone, new things!

Brand new footage is up!

New shot!

So, this next week or two is montage week. I'm currently getting Ray's walk cycle done, so I can insert it into the following shot. Maybe I can have a full scene to show you by this evening? Who knows...

Update: An extra shot has been added!

Hooray, my hard drive crashed!

Last night at 1:47 AM, my macbook's hard drive crashed, taking my boards, character designs and BGs with it. Thank god I have most of that either uploaded online, on a flash drive or on the school's server, plus I have hard copies of the script. I am so thankful I decided to go with Toonboom and do all my animation on a separate computer. I don't think my 3-year-old macbook would have been able to take the workload.

So, this is just a reminder to everyone working on your film, as well as everyone in general.

BACK.

UP.

YOUR.

WORK.

Don't think your computer will be the one to pull through. That's what I did (even though I was told a million times to back everything up to an external hard drive, which I did, but last time was a year and a half ago). I foolishly paid the price. Maybe once I win the lottery, I can get someone to go through the pain-staking process of retrieving the data from my old hard drive. It's possible, just really expensive... somewhere in the realm of $1200.

Didn't hear me well enough the first time? Fine, I'll say it again. BACK UP YOUR WORK!

Revised animatic!

HERE IT IS!

So, a couple things; aspect ratio in the animatic is messed up. The boards are in 4:3, but the final film will be in 16:9, so each board will adapt as I focus on more and more shots.

Secondly, there's not really much music in the animatic, except the montage. Believe me, there will be a lot of music in the final film. And speaking of sound, Ray is accidentally missing a scream at one point in the film.

And thirdly, I still might tinker with ending (when Ray ends up back at the bus stop). It's not quite to my liking, yet, so I'll figure that out as I go along.

Anyway, now I can go back to animating!

Background (in progress)

This animatic is not going to be up until later today, so to tide you all over, here is an in-progress background. The blue sketchy bits are the unfinished parts. Also, Ray and Blotto will be standing on top of the hill in the foreground.

Obligatory blog post! ... an Oblogatory?

Very busy week. Getting shots done and making layouts.

Speaking of shots, here's one!

Shot 26

Really messing around with AfterEffects here. Stars aren't showing up too well in Photoshop, so I'm just inserting them in AfterEffects. Seems pretty cool and I can manipulate the randomness/movement/size of all the stars. You'll notice that they get slowly brighter as the shot progresses. I do prefer the starry night effect in Photoshop (it works, but it never exports correctly, no matter what kind of file it is) but this'll have to do.

Other things!

I met with my voice actor, Eric Bauza, over the past week. Really cool guy and has done a lot of professional work, for TV shows and struggling animation students alike! I listened to his demo, and Blotto's voice is definitely in there. Guy's got a serious amount of range.

I've also been looking at score composers; Dustin Painter has been a front runner, and I'm really enjoying his work. It's very atmospheric and Thomas Newman-esque, which I think would fit the mood of the film very well. We'll be meeting later on this week, hopefully.

That's all for now. Tune in some other time for more thesis hijinks!

New BG! And new shot!

Look, everyone, it's a new background for shot number 26! Click on the image for full effect.

So, you may notice that the grass has a gesso texture, which suits it quite well, in my opinion. Rather than nabbing some poor soul's gesso texture off the internet (which I actually did in this case), I'm going to get some of the materials myself and create some textures that I'll scan into my computer. The one you see above is a placeholder. I also may tone down the light blue, just to make everything blend a little more smoothly.

Head count: shots 4, 9, 10, 15, 19, 25 and 26 are either animated or completely finished!

Speaking of finished, here's a finished shot.

Shot 25

Well, it may be completely finished. The stars aren't very visible, so may have to go back in a tweak it a little. Also, those moving cloud thingies in the background may have to be slowed down a few pegs.

It's a short clip, but I just wanted to make sure that the style and Ray's colour scheme are both functional. I'm very pleased with how everything is turning out so far. Let's keep this animation parade going!

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Let's put up some boards!

These are boards that I have re-done so far. Keep in mind that there are a couple missing, because the ones missing are shots I'll be using from my older boards.

Also, I apologize for the lack of red arrows.

In the above shot, Ray and Kate are arguing.
K: "Don't honey me! See, this is what you do to me, you try to sweet-talk me into thinking everything is OK, but it isn't Ray!"
(Then we have a missing shot of Ray talking)
R: "The company had no choice! They had to lay us off! I can't control what happens!"
(then from Blotto's POV, the animated shot from my last post)
K: "Well, get in control! Look, I think we both have some thinking to do. We'll talk later."
(And then back to the boards)
R: "No, wait!"
K: "Bye"

That's all for now. More to come!

First animation shot!

So for the sake of efficiency, all non-dialogue shots are being done for the next few weeks.

First animation shot with Blotto! Very pleased with how it's turned out.

Revised Character bios!

Blotto, the Cat-God of High Fives

Blotto is the transcendental Cat-God who lives in the High Five realm, and is always fun-loving, mysterious and keeps it cool. An honest and trustworthy advocate of good will and righteousness, Blotto moved into an area a few thousand light years away from the Pillars of Creation. Over the decades, he fleshed out his space, thus resulting in the High Five Realm. Ever since, he has given himself the responsibility in restoring faith in humanity… through high fives.

Blotto has wisdom way beyond his years, yet at the same time, he is youthful and not afraid to bring out his inner child. He’s very charismatic and though he has a very stream-of-consciousness way of thinking, he still has a highly confident perception of how everything plays out. Blotto can manage the very fabric of reality itself, allowing himself to change his form as well as the form of objects around him. The color of his fur can change depending on his mood or what he’s talking about. Every now and then, he’ll revert to his cat-like instincts, such as playing with string or cleaning himself.

Ray Schilling

Ray is a rational, honest man who’s never had any bad intentions, but always seems to be a victim of misfortune. He’s a little bit of a wimp, and often doesn’t stand his ground. Kate, his long-term girlfriend, is dominant in their relationship, and Ray often has to pertain to her needs much more than Kate to his. Ray doesn’t really have any friends, or at least any local ones. He spends much of his time working/sitting in front of a screen, and his social life died out years ago.

Ray goes through each day thinking it will be better than the last, but his life continues to follow a desperate and dull routine. He can often be stubborn and unwilling, which is probably why he has given up on finding the path to happiness. He’s 35 years old.

Picasso Blotto

Not very relevant, but thought it would still be appropriate for the thesis blog. It's Blotto with some Picasso influence!

This is for my Directed Studies course, by the way. Had to do Blotto in a different style, and Picasso seemed like it would be fun.

Back in Business

Hello, folks!

Summer is over, and we're back to reality.

Things that I have to do this week:

Re-boarding some bits of the first and second act.
Contact voice actors.
Animate non-dialogue shots.
Backgrounds.
Finalize script.

It's all coming thick and fast.

In more uplifting news, a Cintiq is now in my possession! Since my film is mostly digital, that will most definitely increase my productivity. Later today, I'm going to start moving equipment (mostly books, decoration, etc.) into my wonderful new home called my animation cubicle. I'm making it my goal to literally make it my home away from home. I'm bringing in bed sheets, I'm bringing in pillows, I'm bringing in toiletries. It will be glorious.

To tide you over, here are some new backgrounds.

Ray's world is done in pencil, and then coloured in Photoshop. Though I really like the pencil style, scanning in the drawings is a real bore, so I actually decided to download some pencil brushes for photoshop. All of the pencil-like aesthetic, none of the hassle.

Also, here's a preview of Blotto from my re-boards.

Lookin' good. Back to boarding!

(Finally) More concept art!

Wow, haven't updated this bad boy in a while. Here's something that should tide some of you over; Blotto dons his aviator gear and flies in a cardboard box towards the Dumpster of Fate. You could say there was a little inspiration from Calvin and Hobbes.

Also, greetings from France!

More concept artwork - Bus Stop & Ray

So here's Ray at the bus stop. The human world is a more grungy, black and white, and much more uninviting than the lush and expansive landscape of the High Five Realm. I'll do some artwork for the overall look of the city.

Also, Ray looks different. It's not his final design, but it works a little better than my last one, and would be fairly easier to animate. Also, he has actual clothes, instead of the bland shirt and pants that I often revert to. (Well, OK, it's still a bland shirt and pants, but at least it lends more towards Ray's character)

More to come! I should put up some bits and pieces of my rough thumbnails at some point...

Blotto's influence?

This probably doesn't tell you anything all that important regarding my film, but I realized that Blotto is a cross between:

Jake the Dog

Simon's Cat

... and the Genie

That is all.

The High Five Realm: Concept Art

So here's another space background along with a teaser of the high five realm. As you can see, the landscape of the realm includes lush fields/hills of green with blue flowing rivers. There'll be more to add, especially visual gags involving high fives, but I just wanted to establish the initial colour scheme of the scenery.

And wow, am I incredibly happy with it. This is very close to the look that I want pertaining to colour and texture. THANK YOU, ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR! If it was not for that program, I wouldn't be able to establish the painterly feel. I initially thought I'd do something of the more grassy look, but the paintbrush blobs carry a more organic, free-spirited sense that definitely suits the realm.

As you can see, Blotto is maxing and relaxing. I'm glad his swimming pool mattress turned out better than I expected, though it probably won't make an appearance in the film... or maybe it will? We'll see.

Two problems: Blotto's mid-section is a little warped and secondly, as much as I love the space background, it looks a little too photo-realistic for the realm. I'll try to run the space backgrounds through some Photoshop filters and see if I can get a more cartoon-y result.

Monday, February 28, 2011

More space!

Hooray. JPEG exported from Photoshop that actually works!

I also discovered I can make some pretty cool textures. Really getting some visual ideas from messing around in photoshop with all these tools.

Here's another background I made.

Sunday, February 27, 2011

Space! It's a frontier!

I'm finally back! I'll put up some bits of my already-finished pre-lim boards, but until then, here's a space background that could potentially be part of the high-five realm. I made it from scratch with the help of the internet and Photoshop. Problem is, I had so much trouble inserting distant stars in Photoshop (my adjustment levels won't cooperate) and when I exported it to a JPG, a lot of the stars disappeared. You can see some very faint distant stars, but I can't make them more prominent at the moment... So, it doesn't look quite authentic just yet.

Here's a screencap from photoshop in order to show you what it's supposed to look like.
There's a lot more varying brightness in the stars, so it has much more of an outer-space aesthetic. Since it's only a screencap though, the quality's not good enough to use in the final film.

Anyway, I'll work on that. More to come!

Character Designs and Turn Arounds

So, some things may change towards beginning of production, but here are the initial designs of Ray and Blotto (yes, his name is Ray, now) as well as their bios. You can click on the pictures to enlarge them

Ray Schilling

Ray was born in Hamilton, Ontario. Growing up, he had a fairly happy childhood; he has 2 brothers - one younger, one older – who he often played with a lot. His family would often take family trips, one of the most common being their vacations down to the Great Lakes. After he graduated from high school, he attended the University of Western Ontario and got his degree in accounting.

His mother died on Ray’s 22nd birthday, leading to the division of the Schilling family over the mother’s will; Ray, devastated, never asked for anything, and spent the next few years in deep depression. He met Kate Stockton at a bank where she was a teller. After two years of dating, they moved in together. However, Ray still never felt quite happy, especially since their relationships consisted mainly of arguing, which Ray isn’t very good at. He worked at the Walthorpe Accounting Firm for 5 years before being laid off. Right now, he’s 33.

Ray is a rational, honest man who’s never had any bad intentions, but always seems to be a victim of misfortune. He’s a little bit of a wimp, and often doesn’t stand his ground.

Blotto

Blotto is the transcendental Cat-God who lives in the High Five realm, and is always fun-loving, mysterious and keeps it cool. He is a descendant of Felicles, a cat that belonged to Hermes, the Greek Messenger God; through this ancestry, he has inherited supernatural powers and deity-like qualities. He received his first high five from his father as a kitten, and was immediately obsessed with the concept of the high five. An honest and trustworthy advocate of good will and righteousness, Blotto ventured out at the age of 18 (that’s in cat years) and moved into an area a few thousand light years away from the Pillars of Creation. Over the decades, he fleshed out his space, thus resulting in the High Five Realm. Ever since, he has given himself the responsibility in restoring faith in humanity… through high fives.

Blotto, though he declares himself to be a Cat-God, isn’t officially under that position. He just calls himself that. Every now and then, he’ll revert to his cat-like instincts, such as playing with string or cleaning himself.

Thesis Treatment (First Draft)

The High Five Apprentice

Chet is sitting on a bus station bench in a dull, grubby city. Everything is in a charcoal-ish black and white style. He's on the phone with his wife after getting fired from his job. She says she’s leaving the apartment and hangs up. Meanwhile, an alley cat (who’s coloured yellow, even in the human world) lays about in the background, cleaning itself.

Chet, in his defeated state buries his face in his hands, wondering what will become of him. All of a sudden, someone blurts out “HIGH FIVE!” startling Chet. He looks around to find the yellow alley cat, Blotto, with his hand raised. “Don’t leave me hangin’!” he says.

Rather stunned by the presence of a talking feline, Chet doesn’t respond, convincing himself that his melancholy has driven him into a hallucinogenic state of mind. Blotto offers him another high five. Once again, Chet doesn’t pay attention. Blotto then proclaims he’s the Cat-God of High Fives, and says that a high five would make him feel better. Chet just says Blotto isn’t real.

Blotto transforms into a scary, demented version of himself and pins Chet against the bench; he assures him of the fact that he’s very real, and then swallows Chet in one mouthful.

Chet wakes up to find Blotto (returned to his regular form) sitting opposite him. Blotto informs him that he’s in the Realm of High Fives. Chet is still in black and white, but the whole world around him is in beautiful, trippy colour… it’s some sort of high five paradise located in space, with lush fields of green, broad starscapes and lots of open palmed hands.

Blotto reveals that he has chosen Chet to be his High Five Apprentice; his new responsibility is to spread the joy of high fives, and thus bring richness to his world. Chet is reluctant and wants to go home; either way, Blotto forces Chet into an It’s-a-Wonderful-Life type journey. He brings up floating screens that show footage of countless people talking on phones or on their computers, and comments on the fact that because of all this technology, people have lost the ability to communicate on a more physical, personal level. Blotto says that small gestures, such as high fives, can mean a lot more than an email or phone call.

Chet, folding his arms, still won’t accept the ‘offer’; Blotto, still determined, mentions Chet’s struggles such as his bad job, failing marriage and overall sense of depression, and how it’s linked with his disconnection to the world. To show an example, Blotto transports Chet through a vortex into his childhood/adolescence. As the two move through past memories, Chet finds that the most meaningful parts of his life involved personal contact with other people a.k.a first kiss, playing with siblings, shaking hands at graduation, and holding hands with his dying mother. When Chet sees his past self holding her mother's hand on her deathbed, he calls out to her before being sucked back into the vortex.

After returning to the High Five Realm, Chet agrees to become the apprentice. In order to be sent home, all Blotto needs is a high five. After a couple failed attempts (Chet’s never high-fived before) Chet and Blotto finally make a very epic high five that results in colour finally restoring to Chet’s body, quite literally. Afterwards, he faints, and lands on the pavement next to the bus stop bench. He’s also back to black and white.

When he wakes up, a little girl, Eve, is standing with her mother waiting for the bus. At first, Chet thinks he was dreaming, but then notices an image of an open palm burnt onto his wrist. Below reads ‘Believe in the Five’. Chet turns to face Eve… after an awkward pause, he raises his hand and says ‘High Five!’ For a moment, she does nothing, but then happily takes to the offer, and they both high five. Her mother, giving Chet a mean look, drags Eve onto an arriving bus. Eve sits at the window and presses her palm against the bus window. Chet smiles and waves. Eve’s palm turns skin-colored, while Chet’s hand does the same. The bus leaves.

THE END

Poster!

I think I've made a decision, as shown in the picture below.

Treatment to come later today... that is if the internet decides to work.

Thursday, January 27, 2011

And so it comes down...

So I've narrowed my decision down to either The High Five Apprentice or The King has Fallen. I really like the chess idea just because I think it would have a lot of non-cheesy emotional resonance that a lot of people can relate to. It would also give me a challenge in animating age. The High Five film has a lot more creative freedom, and I could do a lot of loopy, crazy animation... things. Also, it sounds completely ridiculous but it still would carry a message that (in my opinion) doesn't seem too forced.

While I'm deciding, here's a more updated version of Blotto.

I was thinking that if I end up using this idea, I could matte some crazy backgrounds onto Blotto's body, such as a lava lamp or mixing paints. Also, sorry the picture is ruining the layout of the blog.

That's all for now.

Thesis Premises

RUDY’S DOG

Rudy’s mundane, drab life drives him to a psychiatrist. The therapist remarks that he could try getting a companion, such as a cat or a dog. The idea clicks with Rudy and he goes off to the pet store to browse.

After looking through a selection of adorable puppies, Rudy comes across a medium-sized yellow dog. The dog carries a constant expression of complete non-amusement. Rudy picks it out, names it Nico, pays for it, and then they both go head out to do activities, such as going to a theme park, paddle-boating, or eating ice cream. Rudy is overjoyed, but Nico carries the same, ominous frown the entire time.

After the pair return home, a stare-off occurs between the two; as Nico stares his same, blank expression into his owner’s eyes, Rudy becomes nervous. There’s something very nerve-wrecking about Nico’s look.

Later on, Rudy’s trying to sleep, while Nico lies at the foot of the bed. However, Rudy notices that Nico continues to stare at him; his eyes just won’t close.
Scared, Rudy heads out his home to escape from Nico, trying to convince himself that there’s nothing to be afraid of.  As he continues to walk about aimlessly, he notices Nico everywhere around him, but in far-off distances. He then imagines his face everywhere, from murals to statues to the people around him…

I’m not quite sure how to finish this one, but I do like the idea of this story, mainly because I have a design for the dog that I’ve always wanted to use, and that would also fit the role of a sinister-looking animal.

THE HIGH FIVE APPRENTICE

This film deals with the appreciation of simple gestures.

Chet, a man in his 30’s, sits at a bus stop while speaking on the phone to his wife; he’s just been fired from his job as an accountant at a firm, and his spouse is considering a divorce. He’s drawn in black and white, with charcoal-like backgrounds. A colored alley cat sits close by, cleaning himself.

Deflated, Chet sits defeated on the bench until someone yells ‘HIGH FIVE!’. It turns out it’s the alley cat, Blotto. Chet convinces himself that he’s seeing/hearing things out of a depression-induced stupor. Blotto further claims that he’s the God of High Fives (in the preferred form of a cat), and wants to give Chet a newfound appreciation of small gestures. Upon Chet’s refusal of the high-five and the denial of Blotto’s existence, the cat whisks him away into the world of the High Five, where he gives Chet a history of the high five. Part of this sequence kind of turns into a trippy journey reminiscent of the tunnel scene from the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Chet, trying to take in everything, asks why Blotto is showing him this. Blotto reveals that he’s been watching him for months, and decided that Chet is the ideal model for spreading the joy of small gestures. He explains how technology has ruined everyone’s way of communicating, and how something as simple as a high five can mean a lot more than an email or telephone call. Chet, after some thought, takes on Blotto’s request and, with a high five, is sent back to the bus stop.

An old woman sits at the bus stop. Chet makes his way to her and offers her a high five. She punches him and calls him a creep, before a bus comes by and picks her up. When Chet sits up, a little girl is standing in front of him, saying that she’ll take the high five. Happily, they do so. The camera pans up into the sky, where Blotto appears. He fives the camera, which cuts to black.

It sounds like a silly idea, and it started out a lot more serious and a lot darker. I almost dropped the whole thing. However, I liked the concept of small gestures and how they affect us. Also, I drew a cat that I really liked… so, that might have something to do with it. If I end up picking this one, I'll try to rework the story in order to add a little more conflict.

THE KING HAS FALLEN

This is quite a personal story.

I have a lot of family who reside in Brazil, and, on occasion, we go to visit them; the head honcho of that extension of my family is my Great Uncle Stefan; since my mum’s father was dead by the time I was born, I’ve always considered his brother Stefan to be a grandfather figure.

Every time we’d visit, me and Stefan, on occasion, would have a game of chess and, being the competitive person that he is, Stefan would usually defeat me swiftly, without remorse. The last game I had with him however, had a somewhat different turnout; we visited him in 2008. He was in his mid-80’s, and in not as good health as he used to be in. We started playing our game of Chess and in 10 minutes, I had taken his Queen. After a pause, Stefan, with a depressing look, slumped and tipped over his king, declaring that he didn’t want to play anymore. I was shocked, and would have never expected him to react that way. After all these years, I had almost enjoyed losing to him, because I always looked up to him.

The animation would basically be the relationship between a boy and his grandfather over the years, portrayed through their chess matches. The grandfather would always win, but as he grows older, he loses his edge, and is eventually defeated by his grandson. Even though the boy wins, his reaction is pretty much the one I had.

Thesis Ideas... shown through the power of images

I'm not going to reveal too much, but here's a little artwork that shows a couple of concepts I'm developing.

First off, this is Rudy

Next up is Blotto the Transcendental Cat

That's all for now. More teasers to come!

And so it begins...

Hello, world!

My name is Tom Kanter and this is my thesis blog.

I suppose you should know a couple things about me. I'm from Belgium (but carry Swedish/British dual citizenship). I live in Los Angeles and study at USC. Also, I can make my eyebrows dance while simultaneously wiggling my ears.

Over the next 16 months, you will read tales of the blood, sweat and tears that have fallen because of this production. It will be tough. It will be exhausting. And it will be glorious. Glorious and animated.

So I have a couple ideas for the film. Still, I haven't found that one perfect idea that I know I can commit to.

I can tell you that it will be animated in 2D (preferences being pencil and paper + AfterEffects), there will be dialogue, and a custom score. Also it will most likely be narrative-based, and probably focus on a one or two characters. I've also thought of doing some sort of mockumentary but we'll see.

And lastly of all, it will probably be a dark comedy.

That's all for now. More to come. In the meantime, I will shamelessly promote my final project from second year.
